ACAJ is saddened and disappointed that rural and regional Australia appears to have been disproportionately hit hardest by cutbacks at the ABC - one of the country's most trusted and respected news organisations.

Former Governor General and current Advocate for Soil Health, Major-General the Honourable Michael Jeffrey AC, AO (Mil), CVO, MC (Retd) provided RMSA members and guests with quite a vivid outline of the state of Australia's soils at RMSA's 22nd October Luncheon Meeting.
As Chairman for the group "Soils for Life", Major-General Jeffery was in October 2013 appointed by Prime Minister Julia Gillard as Australia's first-ever Advocate for Soil Health.

Young Naracoorte journalist, Syke Hoklas has been announced as the recipient of the 2014 Young Rural and Regional Journalist Professional Development Award.
A journalist with the Fairfax owned Naracoorte Herald since 2012, Skye is also currently completing the fourth year of a Bachelor of Journalism with an Associate Degree in Languages & Culture (Italian) at the University of South Australia.

Significant peer recognition and a total of $6,000 in prize money plus trophies is on the table in this year’s prestigious 2014 Telstra & Rural Business Support Rural Media Awards.
Individual awards will be given to the best journalists in print, radio, television and online media and new regional print and photojournalism awards with significant prize money is being offered for each category. Winners of the four specialist awards will then compete for the overall 2014 Telstra & Rural Business Support Rural Journalist of the Year Award, carrying an additional $750 in prize money.

SA based ABC Country Hour reporter, Laura Poole has won the national radio category of the 2014 Rabobank Australian Star Prize for Rural Broadcasting.
Laura’s story, “Border tension over OJD” focused on how sheep producers were coping with the contentious regulations governing how the spread of sheep wasting disease, Ovine Johne’s Disease was being controlled. The radio piece was the culmination of considerable research and consultation by Laura with primary producers, sheep bodies and state regulators about the newly introduced OJD rules.

Tom has won the prestigious 2014 Australian Council of Agricultural Journalists’ ‘Star Prize for Rural Writing’, which includes a trip to Scotland later this year to attend the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists’ Congress.

South Australia-based staff writer with media company Coretext, Rebecca Jennings has been recognised internationally as a ‘Young Leader’ in agricultural journalism.
Rebecca became the successful Australian nomination for the 2014 IFAJ-Alltech Young Leaders in Agricultural Journalism award, before being selected as one of 10 winners from around the world. She will now join a select group of other young rural journalists in an intensive professional development program to be held in conjunction with the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists (IFAJ) annual congress in Scotland in September.
