Dick James inducted as a Rural Media Icon (Oct 2010)

Former Stock Journal editor Dick James has been inducted as the 2010 Rural Media Icon.

Dick started with the Stock Journal in January 1954. At that time the publication was known as the Adelaide Stock & Station Journal. Dick was appointed editor of the Stock Journal in 1976 and was managing editor from 1985-1987. In 1998 he decided to take a short break, but was invited back by the Stock Journal proprietors to take over as livestock editor. Dick relinquished that role in late 2001 to provide an upgrade for a younger man. ...

Alan Richardson honoured as “Rural Media Icon” (Oct 2012)

Prominent former ABC rural and regional radio journalist, Alan Richardson was recently inducted by Rural Media South Australia as its fifth “Rural Media Icon”.

In the early 1970’s Alan attended Roseworthy Agricultural College, gaining the Roseworthy Diploma of Agriculture and Diploma of Agricultural Technology. He graduated as Dux of both courses and was awarded the prestigious “Gramp Hardy Smith Award” for the person showing the best all-round character and ability, taking into specific consideration his manliness, his leadership, his sportsmanship and his scholarship. ...

Mentoring Award for Country Journalists (July 2012)

An initiative designed to foster excellence in regional journalism has been announced by the Royal Agricultural & Horticultural Society (RA&HS) & Rural Media South Australia (RMSA).

Jointly funded by the two organisations and supported by media mentor partners the Stock Journal, Channel Seven, ABC Rural and The Advertiser, the award encourages greater reporting on SA Country Shows and aims to elevate the importance of regional communities and rural issues for all South Australians. ...

Food shortage investigation sends Staight to international congress

An investigative report into Australia’s role in the global food shortage has won a South Australian journalist the 2012 Rabobank Australian Star Prize for Rural Broadcasting.

Leigh Radford takes up international representation

One of Australia’s most senior rural broadcasters and RMSA Vice President, Leigh Radford has been appointed to represent the Australian Council of Agricultural Journalists (ACAJ) on the executive of its international counterpart.

Leigh Radford replaces rural journalist and author, Liz Harfull as national delegate to the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists (IFAJ). Liz served for more than 10 years as IFAJ delegate and continues as ACAJ president. ...

One of the most significant contributors to rural and regional media in this state, Norman Marston has been inducted by Rural Media South Australia as a “Rural Media Icon”.

With a history of over six decades leading innovation in the country newspaper sector, Norman Marston started his career working for the family newspaper in Eudunda and Burra.
